Story Synopsis

Set in 1960 in a dirty back alley of New York, Little Shop of Horrors tells the story of Seymour Krelbourn, an orphan and outcast who works for Mr. Mushnik in Mushnik’s Skid Row Florist, with no hope of a better life. His two loves in life are “strange andexotic plants”, and Audrey, the shop assistant with a sadistic Dentist (Orin Scrivello, D.D.S.) for a boyfriend.
While his boss, Gravis Mushnick, struggles to keep the shop open, Seymour seeks a way of bringing the shop--and himself--fame and fortune. He purchases an exotic plant from an oriental street vendor, naming the plant Audrey II, after the girl he loves. The plant proves good for business, attracting more customers to the store, but gradually Seymour learns to his horror that Audrey II craves blood and flesh, and Seymour must scare up human food to satisfy the plant's appetite. In the end, Seymour must confront the plant to save all of mankind.

What They Said

The Press...

"Audrey II normally takes some upstaging, but this production certainly shares out the spoils with the cast and production team more than holding their own. Martin made excellent use of all the facilities available to blend the scene changes and minimise any breaks, while providing maximum interest with the action on stage. Russ’s sympathetic handling of the music provided plenty of contrast with good control at all times and plenty of good music from stage and pit. Morven MacLeod was outstanding as Audrey, vocally and dramatically, not least with “Somewhere that’s Green”, sung so expressively. Very good performances from Rob Harrison (Seymour), Matt Fry (Mushnik), and Luis Ogando (Orin) with well established characters and good stage presence. Audrey II was handled very well, voice and action. The Ronnettes provided excellent support with good harmony singing while the chorus were very effective in their brief appearances, both groups being nicely choreographed. The well designed set provided space for action and, together with the lighting and costumes, enhanced the visual presentation. The first act sound level was slightly high at times with some distortion, but act two seemed a better balance. Very good entertainment and an enjoyable evening." (NODA)

The Press...

"Firmly established as one of the nation's favourite musicals, Little Shop of Horrors is not the easiest of shows to stage but Beeston Musical Theatre Group have risen to the challenge admirably with a super cast, strong voices and a truly wonderful Audrey II - a blood thirsty plant from outer space for those of you that don't know. The story is mainly staged in Mushnik's Skid Row Florist Shop where the timid Seymour Krelbourn is employed as general dogsbody, along with the glamorous shop assistant Audrey who is going out with a sadistic dentist. Things are looking bleak for the shop until Seymour buys a 'strange and exotic' plant and persuades the dubious shop owner, Mr Mushnik, to display it in the shop window to attract customers. The plan works and the plant and Seymour are soon famous and Seymour wins the heart of his co-worker Audrey. But everything starts to fall apart when Audrey II, as Seymour affectionately calls the plant, wants feeding and she won't settle for traditional plant food... You would never know that this is director Martin Holtom's first foray into musical theatre. The experience of his musical director Russ Singleton shows in the tight harmonies and vocal strength. The show is well rehearsed and moves along at a slick pace with a confident and enthusiastic cast. Rob Harrison is a well-chosen Seymour and Morven MacLeod is a delightful Audrey with a lovely voice. Matt Fry puts in a wonderfully comic performance as skinflint Mushnik and Luis Ogando plays the sadist Dentist with relish. The Ronettes too deserve a mention in their supporting vocal and acting roles. Of course the star of the show is the fantastic Audrey II, animated by the stunning vocals of Tom Paulson who really brings the evil character of the plant to life. BMTG have put together a strong show and their version of Little Shop of Horrors is well worth a trip to Beeston but viewers beware ... whatever you do, don't feed the plant! --Fiona Watson ."
